Trans Rights Tags Blocked on Twitch.tv *Update

It's being reported that Twitch.tv is now blocking and even automatically removing the Channel Tags "TransRights" and "TransRightsHumanRights" on streamers accounts.

Users on Bluesky started reporting today that they are unable to add the tag "TransRights" to their Twitch and have even had it removed from their account if it had been there previously.

XINexes on Bluesky reported that the various tags "TransRightsHumanRights", "transrightshumanrights", and "transrightsalways" were also met with the same moderation policy error.

One user is saying they are able to still add "TransRights" as of the time of posting, and another reports that the tag "TransAlly" works but they could not add the "TransRights" tag.

My trans peers deserve to live with dignity and joy, and I'm sick of having to yell at a different entity every other day to reverse fascist policies that seek to dehumanize them.

Fuck Twitch, trans rights are human rights, and everyone who stands in their way is my enemy. I have a joke in several discord chats I'm in that "If I Say How I Really Feel The Government Is Going To Subpoena My Account", so I'll leave it at that.

There are already two ¹ posts ² on "Uservoice", Twitch's dedicated forum at the time of writing that speak up about the issue and call for it to be fixed. You can show your support by "voting" for their topics to be address, or even make your own post regarding the matter. I chose not to make a separate forum post because I'm not familiar with Twitch on the streamer side, and I wasn't sure what topic it should go under. I made my own comment under DOOMVEGA's forum post.

As of the following morning it's been reported to have been at least partially corrected, with Celly Charms who was active on the topic last night saying that she's heard that people at Twitch have their eyes on the issue.

But even if it was fixed, why did the even happen at all? Celly asks the same question in a thread she posted this morning.

I don't have much experience with blocklists but for a brief stint of being a Reddit mod and attempting to set one up to help my workload. Even then, I went through with CTRL-F and made sure words I didn't want to be blocked weren't. Twitch is a company that has hundreds of workers if not thousands (some ³ websites ⁴ reported the number to be in the ten's of thousands, while one estimated a little over a thousand and one at a mere 900). There is a duty of diligence that is even more necessary at a website that reportedly hosts 7.3 million channels streaming per month.

Especially if Twitch is importing pre-compiled blocklists, there should be a team that double checks that those imported blocklists are to Twitch's moderation standards. Had streamers not already been going to add "NoGenAI" tags to their accounts following the news of Twitch automatically opting users into Generative AI training, how long would it have taken to make this error widely known?

And even then, multiple users are saying there are discrepancies with what tags are able to post. Bluesky user A Byrd of the Brainz has been experimenting which tags are allowed by the system and has found that some tags with the phrase "HumanRights" within them are still getting flagged.

However, other users have reported that they can use the tag "TransRightsAreHumanRights", and suggest it may be a regional problem. That is it's own can of worms...

What else is in the blocklist that isn't against Twitch's moderation policy that needs to be removed? As I said before, I think Twitch needs to create a team to thoroughly search and remove any tags that should not be in the blocklist. Assuming that this was a pre-compiled blocklist that was added, there should be an internal investigation into where the list originated from and why it was chosen, as well as a public apology and explanation from Twitch to the Trans community. It is unacceptable that this happened, and measures need to be taken to make sure this isn't repeated in the future.

I still stand by my decision to cancel my Twitch Turbo subscription, but it does bring up a precarious conversation: What to do about Channel Subscriptions? Some users have suggested going to Ko-fi to support streamers instead of directly through Twitch. I think this is something streamers will now have to decide what they would prefer and communicate it to their viewers.
Since I'm unfamiliar with Twitch from a streamers viewpoint, I can't say whether or not cancelling subscriptions and choosing an alternative way to support them is a better choice. I'm lucky in that the few people I subscribe to are friends, and I can ask them directly what they prefer, but with others it might be hard to communicate with and find an answer.

All in all, this is an event that has dehumanized my friends and peers and needs to be rectified and addressed publicly by Twitch.
